What Does FG Mean in Soccer? Firm Ground Guide
By XIANGCHI · Published 2026-11-06
FG stands for “firm ground”. FG soccer cleats have molded studs fixed to the outsole and are designed for natural grass pitches that are dry to slightly wet. They are the standard outdoor match cleat for most players. On artificial turf or hard ground, a TF (turf) shoe is usually the better choice.

Where the FG label comes from
Brands and factories label soccer cleats by the surface the outsole is built for. “FG” appears on boxes, product names and catalogs so buyers know at a glance which ground the boot suits. You will often see it next to other codes such as SG (soft ground), AG (artificial ground), TF (turf) and IN or IC (indoor court).
How an FG outsole works
An FG outsole is a relatively stiff plate with a set of molded studs. The studs are long enough to penetrate grass and the top layer of soil, which gives grip when you push off, turn and brake, but short enough not to sink too deep on firm ground. Stud shapes vary:
- Conical studs – round, allow easier rotation of the foot.
- Bladed studs – flatter and longer, focus on straight-line grip.
- Mixed layouts – combine both for balance.
In our range, FG plates are mostly TPU, a tough and flexible plastic. Our kids FG model 796H-2 Flyknit Firm Ground Cleats uses a rubber outsole.
When should players use FG?
| Surface | FG suitable? | Better alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Natural grass, dry to slightly wet | Yes – the intended use | — |
| Very wet, soft grass | Limited | SG (soft ground) |
| Artificial turf (3G/4G) | Possible on some pitches, check rules | TF or AG |
| Hard ground, short turf, training mats | Not ideal | TF |
| Indoor court | No | IN / IC |
FG vs TF in one sentence
FG has fewer, longer molded studs for grass; TF has many short rubber nubs for turf and hard ground. Many of our designs come in both: 2608M Firm Ground Cleats and 2608M-1 Turf Soccer Cleats, or 23152 Firm Ground Cleats and 23152-1 Turf Soccer Cleats. Buying FG cleats wholesale
For retailers and distributors, FG is usually the backbone of an outdoor range. Things to check when you source FG cleats:
- Size range. Our adult FG models cover EU 34–47 depending on style; cross-size models such as QS163 Firm Ground Cleats start at EU 32.
- Upper material. PU uppers are durable and easy to clean; PU + flyknit uppers are softer and lighter.
- Price. We list a FOB Xiamen price on every product page, from USD 9.50 to 16.30 per pair.
- Speed. Stock FG pairs ship in 1–3 days from 1 pair; custom versions take about 35 days after sample approval.

FG and the other codes you will see
| Code | Meaning | Typical outsole |
|---|---|---|
| FG | Firm ground | Molded studs, firm plate |
| SG | Soft ground | Fewer, longer, often removable studs |
| AG | Artificial ground | More, shorter studs for artificial grass |
| TF | Turf | Rubber sole with many short nubs |
| IN / IC | Indoor / indoor court | Flat gum-rubber sole |
Some products carry combined labels such as “FG/AG”, meaning the outsole is designed to work on both natural grass and certain artificial pitches. Our current range is labeled FG or TF only.
Care tips you can pass to your customers
- Knock off mud and grass after each use, and wipe PU uppers with a damp cloth.
- Dry cleats at room temperature, away from heaters, so the upper and plate keep their shape.
- Use FG cleats on the surfaces they are made for — playing on hard ground wears studs faster.
Simple care notes on your product pages or hang tags help customers get more life from their cleats and reduce complaints.
FG for youth players
Youth FG cleats follow the same idea but with lighter construction and easier closures. Our kids FG models 315 Kids Firm Ground Cleats (EU 28–39) and 796H-2 Flyknit Firm Ground Cleats (EU 30–39) are made for younger players, and 315-1 Kids Turf Soccer Cleats is the turf twin of 315. For clubs that want one style from youth to senior teams, cross-size FG models such as 2608M Firm Ground Cleats (EU 32–46) and T2610 Firm Ground Cleats (EU 33–46) are a good fit.
Summary
FG means firm ground: molded studs for natural grass. It is the core outdoor category for most soccer retailers. Pair it with TF versions for artificial pitches, and use kids sizes to serve youth teams. If you would like a mixed FG sample order, contact Candice.
